Berkshire, also known as "Berks" and the Royal County of Berkshirelies west of London and is an area of rural beauty to the western side with many small villages centred around Newbury and a group of larger towns to the east. These eastern towns such as Reading, Wokingham, Slough, Maidenhead and Bracknell are very densely populated and commercial centers and yet they retain a lot of rural charm with large open areas such as Ascot, famous for the Ascot races and Ascot Stables, Braknell Forest near Sandhurst and Windsor Great Park. To the North of this area lies the town of Windsor, where the Royal Palace of Windsor Castle can be found. Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the World and was built in 1098. The county is one of the oldest in England, being reliably dated back to 648 AD as part of the Kingdom of Wessex. The county takes its name from the Celtic word for 'hilly and lies to the west of London.

The County is well served by road transport routes centred mainly on Reading. The rail transport route from London passes through Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, Reading, Newbury and Hungerford. The Motorway M4 passes through Slough, Maidenhead and between Reading and Wokingham. The eastern side is crossed by major roads that connect Slough, Maidenhead, Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell to London and the south east. The Western side is crossed from north to south by the A34 through Newbury.
